This month I had the pleasure of meeting the stunning Emilia Wickstead, who I believe is an inspiration to women. Not only is Emilia extremely successful, polished and effortlessly chic, she is also a working mother with two children under the age of three. Today, due to the demands of our high-paced lives, the modern woman is no longer only a mother, but often the main or equal income earner in the household. I dedicate this issue to all the working mothers in Christchurch, who manage to juggle a career and a home life. Get yourself a cup of coffee, sit down for half an hour and enjoy our latest issue of Style. Victoria Tait STYlE EDiTOr

Moochi Moochi has opened its largest store in New Zealand right on our doorstep. The new store will hold the largest collection of Moochi lines, including the mainline brand, 6 & 7 relaxed streetwear, its made-to-measure bridesmaid collection and favourites. After a garment has been a top seller for two years it makes it into the favourites collection, coming out in a different colour range each season. With each of the stores having an individual style, Moochi’s brand manager Georgia Wilkinson says of Merivale, “The concept behind this store was to be able to showcase the full collection in separate areas of the store, giving a seamless shopping experience.” Moochi, 203 Papanui Road.

Bluff Oysters It has been said that Bluff oysters are the finest in the world and this is because they are grown slowly in the cold clean waters of the Foveaux Strait. The season typically runs from the end of March through to August. You will notice they have just arrived at restaurants and fish outlets around the city. However you like them – natural, Kilpatrick or battered – get your hands on some scrumptious, succulent oysters now.

A the BiCyCle thief After a long wait The Bicycle Thief has finally returned and is now situated at 136 Old Tai Tapu Road, Kennedys Bush. The newly refurbished restaurant is in a villa-style building and still offers all of the old favourites. It is open Wednesday through to Sunday, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 9.30am to 11pm.

WAllACe COttON With winter just around the corner, it might be time to update your bedroom interiors. Wallace Cotton is now open in the new 203 Papanui Road development and has an exquisite range of new season velvet bedding, with four new fashion colours: mustard, soft pink, navy and charcoal.

Five Minutes with Hop Baron

With the Great Kiwi Beer Festival set to ignite our taste buds in Hagley Park (April 2), Victoria Tait catches up with Richard Moore from Hop Baron, one of Canterbury’s top craft beer companies. We find out the difference between IPAs and APAs, and who the Hop Baron really is. What is the Great Kiwi Beer Festival (GKBF) all about for you? When I get a minute away from our site it’s all about getting around as many vendors as I can, sampling new and unique beers and some old favourites. Beer and food go hand in hand, so it’s also a great chance to sample what some of the great food vendors have on offer. You must have been to lots of festivals, do they all blend in together? The GKBF, in particular, is a great event and every year it’s different, which keeps it interesting. The new beer varieties and brewers along with the crowd, music and

layout all contribute to making the day unique. This year I am really looking forward to seeing John Toogood and the Jordan Luck Band. Can you please explain the beer acronyms, for example IPA, APA and NZPA? They are all variants of the Pale Ale, with the letter(s) in front giving you a clue as to what types of hops are used. Hops are used to add aroma and bitterness, but also have antimicrobial properties. In the 1700s, the British living in India were importing beer from England, and found that adding additional hops to their pale ale kept the beer

fresh for the long haul. Hence the name was coined Indian Pale Ale (IPA). IPA is now one of the most popular beer styles, and the APA and NZPAs are IPA variants using only American or, in the case of the NZPA, New Zealand hops. At Hop Baron we make a Poolside Pale Ale that sometimes gets called a PPA – but the hops don’t have to come from a pool. Can you give me a little bit of info on what Hop Baron is about? For us it is all about choice. You would not eat the same sandwich every day, so why drink the same beer? Our vision is that each beer you drink is selected on its individual merits – not the size

of its advertising budget. On your bottles, you have a symbol that looks like a Celtic knot, can you tell us about it? Our knot is a 1600-year-old Frankish symbol and a fine example of rotational symmetry. Baron is one of the few Frankish words used today. Therefore, it is more than likely our knot has been used by many barons before us. Are you the Hop Baron? No, the Hop Baron is figurative. For us it is the innate feeling that helps us do the right thing. That means we do not take any shortcuts – we brew with patience and respect.

City2Surf 2016 Wind Down Party Once the tendons have stopped squealing and the muscles have ceased their groaning, it is time to have a party to celebrate surviving the ordeal. So it was that some of the brave participants and sponsors of this year’s City2Surf fun run gathered in the Westpac Rescue Helicopter hanger to have a ball. For some present, the party really did get off the ground, with Kath Copland winning the opportunity to be winched aloft, to dangle spiderlike below the big red chopper. It was a load of fun, a sequel to a great race and a chance to give a big thank you to all involved. For some, too, there was an appointment with a tube of liniment at bedtime!

A Gala Evening with Dame Kiri Te Kanawa A true goddess of opera graced Christchurch with her magic, enticing devotees to come and be enchanted. Dame Kiri Te Kanawa performed a recital evening at the Isaac Theatre Royal, which is the perfect temple of culture in which to witness the wonder of Dame Kiri. Accompanied by a solo piano, Dame Kiri performed well-loved songs along with new pieces, interspersed with witty anecdotes between sets. The applause became tumultuous when O Mio Babbino Caro, an aria so often tortured by “popera” poseurs, was sung as it was meant to be. Those who were privileged to attend went away with a treasure beyond price, the memory of a superb evening with a superb artist. Billie Watmuff, Agnes White

Royal New Zealand Ballet Speed of Light Opening Night

Stefan Fairweather, Kate Palmer

Like fighter planes engaged in a whirling, twisting dogfight, dancers blazed across the stage, their terrifyingly fast manoeuvres taking the collective breath of the audience. Speed of Light came to the Isaac Theatre Royal, propelled there by the Royal New Zealand Ballet. The name was no lie because the pace at which the seemingly boneless cast contorted, leaped and gyrated was truly furious. Each of the three ballets on the programme seemed to demand more rocket fuel from the dancers than the last until, not even appearing to heave for breath, they took their bows to well-deserved applause.

Emilia Wickstead is the New Zealand designer famous for dressing the Duchess of Cambridge. She socialises in high society London circles, is good friends with model and presenter Alexa Chung, and is a mother of two. Speaking with Victoria Tait, we learn more about her career, new collection, and how to look sexy while still covering up.

"Sexy can be covered up and beautiful. It's about being effortlessly chic, looking effortlessly cool and sophisticated." – Emilia Wickstead

it is not every day in new Zealand that we get to meet with fashion royalty, yet emilia Wickstead immediately put me at ease with her large smile and casual manner. she could not be more charming. she looks classically beautiful in a pink geometric-print wool dress from a previous collection (she saves a few favourite pieces from each collection). she wears minimal eye make-up and a bright red lipstick with her hair pulled back into a classic sleek ponytail. Born and raised in auckland, emilia moved to Milan at the age of 14, with her mother, designer angela Wickstead, and it was there she found fashion inspiration: “Milan played a huge part in my decision to study fashion.” her italian background can be seen in the interpretation for many of her designs, exhibiting that sleek, effortless look. and with her dark hair and olive skin she could easily be mistaken for an italian belle. emilia studied fashion design with marketing at central saint Martins, in London, and then spent her final year interning at prestigious fashion companies including Proenza schouler, narciso Rodriguez, Giorgio armani and us Vogue. it was through her internship with Giorgio armani she learned how to create commercial

collections and take clothes from the catwalk into retail stores. emilia talks modestly about her early days as a fashion student and says there were many designers who were much better than she was. it was her mother’s teaching and understanding of the construction of garments that really gave her the edge. Breaking into the fashion industry is not for the faint hearted. at the age of 24, emilia started her business in the living room of her London home, by borrowing £5,000 from her then boyfriend (now husband). she had a dream to start her own business, but at the time could not imagine how successful this was to become. one story she shares is when she phoned Vogue’s fashion editor, pretending to be ‘Leila’, her own assistant. ‘Leila’ convinced the editor to look at emilia’s website, the editor loved what she saw, and gave emilia a half-page spread in the internationally acclaimed magazine. today, emilia Wickstead has a store in London’s fashionable sloane street and number of celebrity followers. to her credit, emilia is tight-lipped about her celebrity clients, especially the duchess of cambridge, whom she met at a mutual friend’s wedding. “We do have a lot of personal

relationships with people who will come to our store or showroom,” she tells me, “the minute that a celebrity wears your clothing that gives you international exposure and the best advertising you can get.” some of the big names that have been seen in emilia’s clothing are Kate Bosworth, diane Kruger, Gwyneth Paltrow, Brie Larson and alexa chung – a “really dear friend”. “she’s cool and very sophisticated, and she’s one of my favourite people to dress. she embodies the brand,” says emilia, of alexa. emilia’s current collection has just shown at London fashion Week (where Alexa was in the front row). It was inspired by the 1939 film The Women, directed by George cukor and features denim and jersey: “athletic wear is a new thing for me – it’s my take on the gymnasium.” When i ask her for styling advice for christchurch’s big calendar event – ‘the Races’ – she says we can look sexy without showing too much. as emilia herself proves, red lipstick, minimal make-up and pulled back hair creates a sleek look. “sexy can be covered up and beautiful. it’s about being effortlessly chic, looking effortlessly cool and sophisticated.” her description of the ‘emilia Wickstead woman’ sums up what we all want to be: “she’s the most modern woman in her circle. she wants to walk into the room and be the best dressed and the most noticed. she's confident... and smart and sassy.” And age has nothing to do with it: “I’m dressing 22-year-olds and a woman who has just had her 100th birthday.”

Sustainable Building New Zealand’s first 10-star eco-home has been built right here in Christchurch. Style discovers what makes 9 Church Square, in Addington, worthy of top marks.

Style | home

The Superhome Movement provides a model for a new standard of housing expected to influence Christchurch’s affordable rebuild market, and Church Square is the first of two show homes to be built. “It’s warm, dry, and healthy; energy efficient and environmentally sound,” says architectural designer Bob Burnett. “These homes could be 50 metres square; they could be 480 metres square, no matter – they will be built to a much higher design and performance standard than they would have been otherwise.” whAt iS A 10-StAr homeStAr rAtiNg? “To achieve a 10 Homestar™ rating demonstrates international best practice for being a high-performing sustainable home. A sustainable home minimises the potential detrimental effect on the environment as well as having a low social and economic impact over the ‘life cycle’ of the building.” – Homestar. The rating is affected by all facets of modern living. For example, is your washing line in a covered area that enables you to hang washing out when it’s raining? If so, you’re saving energy by not using a dryer. More complex changes to boost a home up the scale include construction methods that allow renewable energy to be generated on-site, such as from photovoltaic solar panels positioned on the roof. To achieve a 10-star rating is by no means an easy project. However, Bob and his team are set to change our views on how this can be achieved.

houSe FeAtureS Church Square has been structurally engineered for solid seismic performance. The framing is LVL (Laminated Veneer Lumber), which is environmentally friendly and reduces construction waste due to its manufacturing process. The entire home has a ducted energy recovery ventilation system (ERV) that is linked to a solar wall. This harnesses the sun’s energy, then heats air through the ventilation system, in turn reducing heating costs. There is a hydronic underfloor central heating system that is very energy efficient with a low running cost. The home had a combined greywater and rainwater system, with the rainwater collection tank holding 1500 litres. “Greywater treatment and recycling can save between 30 to 60 per cent of potable water and reduces the pressure on local infrastructure,” says Bob. There are water-efficient fittings, solar power, and energy-efficient lighting. And it’s all wrapped in contemporary and stylish design. What is also impressive is the openness they have in regards to the design and construction. After all, the aim is to make a more sustainable environment for our future.

Creating A LaSTING ImpreSSION Home design is not always about trends and styles as each of our homes has different needs and functions. Style catches up with interior designer Vicki Andrews, who highlights how interior spaces are as unique as those living in them. Vicki Andrews has worked in the interiors industry for over 25 years; she has several national kitchen design awards, and is known as one of Christchurch’s leading kitchen designers. Over the years Vicki has seen fads flourish and fad. “I don’t follow trends as such, in fact I have seen many of these come and go over the years. I prefer to work with my clients to understand what it is they need and what suits the design of their home, the way they live and like to work, as well as their budget.” Speaking with Vicki it is easy to see there is no one-size-fits-all layout that works – even the kitchen triangle might not be the perfect answer for all. “Gone are the days where there was just a sink, oven and fridge to make up the triangle of work space. Now there are so many more appliances. Cooking and preparation can be much more sophisticated, or simple; I prefer to work in zones in the kitchen,” says Vicki. Vicki works with all other areas of the home, too. Her designs are practical, stylish and have stood the test of time. “I spend a lot of time with my clients and get an understanding of how they want to use a space, from there I design to suit. That may involve moving walls, creating windows and light, as well as incorporating all joinery aspects. I work in with other consultants, architects, interior and lighting designers and builders.”

Know the space you want to change. For example, if incorporating a scullery, do you want to use this area for storage and hiding mess away from dinner guests, or is this an area you would want to prepare meals in? It’s important to ensure you are not just following the fashion trends of having a scullery. Do your research. Check a designer’s website before commissioning any work. Does their style suit yours? offset modern shapes and materials in your living room by introducing jewel-toned colours and rich textures. French interior architect Joseph dirand is renowned for creating a look that at once seems both modern and traditional. By mixing textures and tones in your furnishings, with strong sculptural shapes in your accessories, you can create a rich and inviting space and avoid the overly sparse look new homes can make the mistake of falling into. For example, colour can be introduced into your sofa or armchairs – think soft green leather, navy blue velvet, or small pops of rich red. There is a sense of luxury in curtains that fall from ceiling to the floor in the softest of linen. Be sure to conceal your fittings with invisible railings and that curtains have plenty of volume when open and drawn. rugs coming out of europe, like danskina, are using new weaving techniques to create chunky textures, such as bauble and rose-like shapes, which will add softness and beauty to any room, especially those with wooden floors. Off-set such softer, richer elements with sculptural accessories that use brass, silver and marble as their materials. A pair of over-sized brass Bash Bowls on your dining-room table, the solid pepe marble mirror on a sideboard, and a timeless table lamp, like the one pictured from minimalux, will complete any room.

Representing luxury and glamour during the 1920s through to the 1940s, the art-deco style was often characterised by rich colours and bold geometric shapes. This was due to the style emerging at a time of high industrialisation, which was the beginning of what we now know as the modern world.

The Modern Fireplace Energy efficiency in building has created innovation on a number of fronts, including the humble fireplace. Unfortunately this heating source is becoming something of the past due to its poor energy performance and high emissions. We are now inventing alternatives to fill the fiery gap.

One of the alternatives to the traditional logburner is an ethanol fireplace. If you’re considering purchasing one, here’s what you need to know. What Is an Ethanol FIrEplacE? An ethanol fireplace is essentially a stainless-steel unit comprised of a burner tray, a cove, and typically a protective screen. They do not need to be vented to the outdoors as they only produce heat, carbon dioxide and steam. Their versatility and adaptability appeal to consumers looking to incorporate an affordable fireplace into their living environments. hoW do thEy Work? The most common method involves ethanol being poured into the combustion chamber and then placed inside of the fireplace. A starter is used to turn on the fireplace. You can then regulate or turn off the burner by way of a sliding mechanism. typEs 1. Burners. The burner is a tray that holds the fuel and regulates the fire; it’s usually made of stainless steel. 2. Inserts. These are metal (again, stainless steel is common) boxes that can be recessed into walls. 3. Freestanding. Wall-hung, tabletop or self-supporting units, often called cocoons. 4. Retrofit units. Designed to fit inside an existing fireplace. CoCoon TeRRA BIoeThAnol FIRe

Autumn Planting

A p

As the weather gives way to a cooler autumn pattern, it’s considered a good time to establish new planting in your garden. Landscape architect, Craig Wilson gives us his advice and tips on autumn planting.

question. Have a good look at the other plants close by to get a feel for the context and any effect they will have on the new plantings.

The air is cooler, there’s (normally) a bit more moisture around and the soil temperatures are still warm enough to promote some good growth before winter sets in. Autumn is a productive season. Typically, the garden centres go on sale and it can be a great time to source some bargainpriced plants – which can be a bonus! If you have an area you’re looking to plant, the following garden design principles will help you to create the look you are after:

Choose a planting theme to help guide your selection. This is where your personal taste can shine through and be expressed. Your theme may be based around a colour, or you may love the feel of a native fernery, or the exotic atmosphere of a Japanese-inspired rockery. Be bold with your planting and go for larger groupings or drifts of a single species. This will allow the visual quality of the plant to be readable and also create stronger contrast to other selections in your planting.

Make an assessment of the soil type and light conditions. Any plant selection you make must be suited to the specific microclimate of the space in

Often I notice gardens put together with a huge range of species, but in small numbers. This can result in a garden that lacks a cohesive feel. Try reducing the number of species selected and then plant in larger drifts. Think about the balance you are creating between evergreen and deciduous elements. If it’s weighted to evergreen, the maintenance required may be reduced, but may also be too static and not express seasonal highlights. Conversely, if the focus is deciduous, you may end up with a bare look in winter after a spring riot. A good approach can be largely evergreen groundcover with specimen flowering deciduous trees.

OuTdOOR cOOkING After our long sizzling summer, you may be contemplating packing up your BBQ and placing it in hibernation for winter. The humble BBQ remains a mainstay of summer entertaining but there is now a huge array of options to suit many budgets and cooking styles. As the evenings grow cooler it is timely to contemplate what changes you might like to make to your outdoor cooking area for next summer. Would you like to recreate the space in which you place your BBQ or have it constructed in to the space?

The location should also take in to account prevailing winds and neighbouring properties. Whilst you might enjoy cooking under the skies, your neighbours may not appreciate smoke billowing in to their outdoor spaces – this is of more importance if your cooking method relies on wood or charcoal.

Alternative methods of outdoor cooking are becoming increasingly popular, including; • Pizza ovens; Wood fired pizza ovens have enjoyed a huge surge in popularity. The warmth and ambience created by a pizza oven, (not to mention the record speeds for churning out pizzas), is guaranteed to make your outdoor space a social hub. Pizza ovens can be portable or permanently constructed and whether made of metal or traditional brick, they are both functional and aesthetically appealing. • Teppanyaki plates; It might take some time to develop the flair of an authentic teppanyaki chef, but in the meantime outdoor teppanyaki plates provide a very easy and versatile method of outdoor cooking. Teppanyaki plates can be portable or constructed within an island or bench. A rangehood will help with extracting steam and cooking smells if your teppanyaki plate is contained in an outdoor room or enclosed space. • A rotisserie can be an attachment for your BBQ or a specialised rotisserie unit. Rotisserie cooking allows self basting, even slow cooking – what better way to get your visitors mouths watering than to see and smell a succulent leg of lamb slowing spinning on a rotisserie! Whichever method you choose for your outdoor cooking, location is important. Being closer to your house will provide convenience so your outdoor cooking doesn’t become a workout trudging back and forth to your kitchen although sufficient distance will help you really embrace the experience of cooking amongst nature.

Proximity to any combustible materials should be factored in when deciding your outdoor cooking location. It is not advisable to start constructing a pizza oven beside a wooden garden shed (possibly containing garden chemicals) otherwise you might find a spontaneous bonfire could put a dampener (or possibly quite the opposite!) on your evening’s entertaining. Outdoor cooking has evolved to the extent that with a bit of planning, cooking in the great outdoors can be a year round activity. Contained outdoor kitchens will provide a functional solution but less extensive options such as partially covering your deck and well placed plantings or walls for shelter will also enable the space to be used comfortably in cooler months. Often the structure containing the cooking feature will lend itself to also having inbuilt drawers and shelving to minimise treks back to the kitchen for forgotten utensils or cooking condiments. Outdoor islands containing your cooker can be constructed from a variety of materials, from granite to concrete or wood and can easily double up as a bar for your guests to lean on or gather around on bar stools. As the nights get longer, it is the perfect time to consider how you could adapt your outdoor area for year-round cooking and entertaining. LYNETTE MCFADDEN

BUSINESS OWNER, HARCOURTS GOLD AND WELL KNOWN BUSINESSWOMAN

After an almost three-year mission involving selling (a home I loved), moving (next door), selling again to the same neighbours (thanks guys), and wondering why we didn’t just buy instead, we are now only three months away from moving into our newly constructed home. Well, at least that’s what I’m working towards, and it would be fair to say there might be some tears if it takes longer than that! It’s so close that I dream about it at night. I see the colours on the walls and the furniture in its ‘just right’ position. I no longer see the builders’ rubble and the mounds of dust, or bang my head on the scaffolding. Don’t you just love that about dreams? But this dream sits across some very harsh realities and I’ve got a new appreciation of how it feels to embark on a massive project whilst trying to juggle a life and career that’s full to overflowing. This month I’ve got some building dos and don’ts to share whether or not they have relevance to others in the same boat, it makes me feel better to have expressed them! Everything and everybody in their place It’s great to engage specialist assistance.

AT LAST!

Whether it be an architect or a designer, both will have their own unique perspective about the project, (which is brilliant). The issues can start when the reality of what they draw or envisage and how you like to live collide. I’m all for beauty but it can come with a massive price tag and an absence of practicality.

Get any changes in writing and make sure all parties know what’s expected. Don’t fall out over not having an understanding of what you were requesting-it’s easy for this to occur when some extras, a change here, a change there, can amount to thousands of dollars.

Constant communication is the secret to reducing stress, allowing everyone to work together rather than wrangle over fittings, spaces and colours.

Not everyone can read plans! I like 3D drawings because I can get a better sense of things and I can see the details. Ask for these if it helps. Despite my best efforts, I have visited our site and been surprised by elements I never realized were going to appear. Windows I hadn’t expected, different door handles, ceiling heights, all examples of details I’d missed. Thankfully it still worked well, once I’d seen everything, but it would have been good if I’d paid closer attention.

Get good tradies What a difference a wonderful team of tradies makes. I’ve really enjoyed the team who have worked for us, ably led by our young foreman, Jake. Despite numerous challenges, this savvy team has battled the elements, the size and complicated nature of the build, and the occasional apathy of other introduced tradesmen. Make sure you get the best possible team, shout beers when it’s hot, and keep the supply of coffee and other goodies up. Watch those ’extras’ Don’t be afraid to make changes if you must, but remember that ‘extras’ add up and will sit outside your initial quote.

If you’re new to buying property call in to one of our Harcourts gold offices and ask to talk with one of our consultants about working with us to help you in the search for your ideal property. G BUYINTY ER PROP WITH S OURT HARC

The devil is in the detail

So here we are; three months and counting down. Wish me luck and wish some to the poor movers who will have me hovering around as they cart my life’s treasures from our current place to our new home. And that’s it, because I’m not moving again!

Merging Two greaT arTs Often an art exhibition may have music as a background to the work, but can the objects play an integral role in a performance? Anne Hudson recently spoke with Laura Forbes, director of Art in a Garden, who was invited to curate sculpture by Johnny Turner for an opera performance at Days Bay Garden, in Wellington.

rhona Fraser produces operas at her home in Days Bay, wellington. no mere soirée or concert, but a full operatic production. This year it was Agrippina, a delightful opera by Handel. Handel’s music and the beautiful baroque instruments announced the start of the opera, which began with the unveiling of three pieces of Johnny Turner’s sculpture at opera in a Days Bay garden. The actors, musicians and audience clap with delight. The work is theatrically lit and provides the set and background to the lively opera. Turner saw his work in a new light whereby the works were given a voice of their own within the production. ‘Crescendo’, suggesting voice, is made from Kairuru (Takaka) marble removed from Parliament building, wellington, when the Beehive annex was installed. ‘Birth of our islands’, referencing the geological origins

of aotearoa, also made from Kairuru marble, is the metamorphosed remains of marine life from millions of years ago, recycled from the demolished Maritime House, wellington. a third stunning piece called ‘Helm’ seemed to anchor the stage performance, and the garden. all three exhibited pieces were beautiful in their own right, but in this setting they were given a new stature. american essayist rose slivka wrote, “Craft makers and artist... [are] reaching inside and beyond the physical nature of the object… The object becomes itself the poet. The object is seen and touched in the language of materials... The artist-shaman invokes invisible forces through the interaction... of the spirit of the material object.” Johnny Turner provides the truth of this statement. Living and working in his wellington

studio, Turner is largely self-taught. His inspiration arises from personal experience, from a sense of the passage of time and the reuse of materials drawn from deep within the earth as well as an on-going fascination with sources as diverse as classical history, indigenous mythology and Japanese aesthetics. He has to consider the notions of hardness, weight and coldness of marble and stone so as to bring out its soft detail and colouring, making sure the natural properties of each individual stone is retained and enhanced by allowing the form to reveal itself. Turner’s work is made in both large and small formats suitable for both indoors and outdoors, always offering a deep and sensual motive behind the production of his work. He creates objects that will last forever and speak to us forever.

Merivale

A Prestigious Shopping Destination Victoria Tait explores why Merivale is becoming one of the fastest growth areas in the Christchurch rebuild. As our city redevelops, certain areas are starting to take shape. One of these is Merivale. Losing many of its shops in the September earthquake, it would be fair to say that Merivale was one of the worst-hit retail areas of Christchurch. There was liquefaction in the streets and substantial damage to the shops on Papanui Road, many of which needed to come down due to severe damage. However, you would have also noticed that Merivale was also one of the fastest areas to recover. I remember speaking with Margaret Quinn only weeks after her retail store, Quinns Fashions, was almost demolished. Rather than take defeat she promptly enlisted a builder to board up areas of the shop to ensure its safely and was back up trading. Margaret had also started working on a redesign for the store.

QuINNS FASHIONS POST-QuAKe

e k

I believe it’s due to the determination of Merivale business owners that the area is not only back up on its feet, but gaining the interest of national retailers, especially those offering high-end fashion and interiors. In the past month, four top retail brands have opened stores in the new development at 203 Papanui Road. Moochi, Kate Sylvester, Wallace Cotton and Rodd & Gunn join the likes of Ruby, Taylor, Plume, Dfusion and JNBY, all on the same stretch of street. Working Style and Victoria Black are but a stone’s throw away, too. Speaking with Moochi’s creative director Kellie Taylor, she mentioned “When looking for a location to open the new store, Merivale was the biggest drawcard, due to becoming a prestigious shopping destination in Christchurch.” With 49 retail stores in Merivale Mall and now a number in the surrounding area, as well as numerous restaurants and cafés, Merivale is fast becoming the “it” location in Christchurch.

options and new technology to ensure your home will be affordable to run. interior décor is really exciting. this is where show homes can really help you get to know current trends, colours, beautiful furnishings and furniture. collect home magazines and figure out what you'd love to emulate. Also pause to give thought to architectural components inside. do you like a raised ceiling? What kind of finishing do top homes use and which styles are you are drawn to? Heating is also a consideration. Have a look at what show homes are offering. Kitchens form the heart of the house. Show homes give you insight into the latest styles, materials and storage facilities available. Bathrooms are another big component. they need to be as luxurious as you can make them, so start dreaming...

Live Life in Colour When you have a life to live, you may as well live it in colour and those who went to hear Annah Stretton speak, came away with their lives enriched. Within the Charles Luny auditorium at St Margaret’s College, Annah presented an evening of styling and fashion advice, which, along with her wisdom, coloured the evening with positivity and richness of thought. Vivid and vibrant were the words that came to mind to describe not just the couture on display, but also the uplifting quality of Annah’s words. This, together with the superb catering, made the warm evening one to remember.

Moochi Grand Opening

Merivale became even more marvellous with the opening of Moochi. Even though the rain had been gracing the city and creating a minefield of puddles to trap the unwary pedestrian, it proved no deterrent to the fashion enthusiasts. The welcome was a warm respite from evening’s coolness as drinks and savoury treats were handed around. Lights reflected off the mirrored interior of the boutique, spreading the airy opulence out into the greyness of Papanui Road, seducing passers-by to enter.

Balayage: This is great for framing the face and adding glow to your hair. For dark hair, initially, balayage can take some time and cost to get right, as there are 10 lightening phases. If you have lighter hair it’s relatively low cost to maintain. BaBylights: A new technique of applying very fine strands of colour throughout the hair with meches or plastic wrap. It helps the hair look multi dimensional and highlights can boost your colour in a more natural way. Pastel hues: These are fun, but the best results show only on very blonde hair. You need to be committed to these colours until they wash out of your hair as they're very difficult to remove otherwise.

2. For thick hair, less colour is better. Concentrate on colour framing your face or the tips of your hair and use less permanent colour and more colour glosses. 3. Colour maintenance is very important. There are some great colour mousses on the market to maintain the correct tone of your colour as well as adding shine and giving a longer-lasting colour.

Best tiPs for hair Colour 1. Your eyes are a great place to get inspiration for your hair colour. If your eyes are one colour, for example blue or brown, you will suit a clean, cool or a block colour. If your eyes are blue but have yellow speckles you will suit a slightly warmer blonde. If you have lots of colouration in your eyes, for example hazel eyes, a variation of three different shades of colour would best suit your skin tone

There are many things to consider when choosing a health and fitness regime to follow through with. fOr example: • What type of exercise to choose: indoor, outdoor or a mixture of both? Running, walking, cycling, swimming, yoga, pilates, dancing, group fitness, a team sport, or something else? • Who to exercise with: just yourself, with a buddy, in a group, or to enlist the help of a personal trainer? • What nutrition guidelines to follow: enlist the help of a nutritionist, or just cut back on processed food, for example? • Balance: how will you ensure you get a good balance of enough rest and recovery as well as the right frequency, duration and intensity of exercise? • Motivation: how will you motivate yourself to get out the door in the first place?! professional advice from a registered exercise professional should always be your first port of call. They can help get you set up with an appropriate personalised programme, help you with exercise techniques, and help you stay accountable to your goals. Once you’re in the swing of things you may find you want some extra assistance to ramp up your progress towards your goals. Investing in a fitbit could help you to achieve this, especially if you’re a ‘details’ person who likes to be well organised and able to measure progress from each and every workout. Similarly, if you find you’re in a bit of a rut and could do with a mini accountability ‘buddy’, then a fitbit could be just the ticket.

Empire Opening

Chris Mansfield, Matt Vieceli

Ron Jeremy, Hannah Lyttle

The thunder of drums invaded the pulse and spurred on the sense of excitement as, with a final flourish, the booming heralded the opening of Empire Bar. Redolent with the atmosphere of imperial Japan, the cool interior was crowded with guests feasting upon the exotic treats generously proffered. Glaring down from display alcoves, suits of samurai armour stood guard-like sentries in their boxes, as the corks flew out of bottle after bottle of Champagne. Chefs deftly displayed their skills to a watching, enthralled audience whilst, if the imagination was suitably aroused, one could fancy Madama Butterfly herself weeping for her Pinkerton in old Nagasaki, could be heard. Such is magic of fantasy.

Mother-Daughter Vision WORDS Victoria tait PHOTOGRAPHY Nick McLeaN Pepperberry Café & Florist is the vision of mother-and-daughter team, Trish and Letty. The combination of a florist and café was something they had always dreamed of undertaking together. Letty was working as a florist in the North West of England, being inundated with inspiration. Upon returning to Christchurch a few years later, and with Trish’s outstanding culinary skills, the café and florist came to life in November 2011. “We wanted to bring something a little different to Christchurch, a warm and inviting café with excellent homemade food and romantic natural flowers at the forefront,” explains Trish. Open bright and early, Pepperberry is the perfect place to start the day, with a strong, hot Hummingbird coffee. The extensive breakfast/brunch menu features seasonal fare

and the popular classics such as warm, fluffy blueberry pancakes with lemon curd. The cabinet is always full and has an ever-changing range of salads, quiches, and frittatas along with the daily ‘blackboard’ special – “The hot croissant with ham off the bone, scrambled eggs and Parmesan hollandaise literally flies out the door!,” says Trish. “Our customers – and us – love that all our food, even the relishes and sauces is made here, on site, in our humble kitchen.” The café also offers a fantastic catering service to cover every need – from feeding hungry bridesmaids on wedding-day morning, to workplace lunch shouts and corporate meetings. Letty, the in-house qualified florist, has many years in the floral industry in New Zealand, Japan and the UK. Her style is an eclectic mix

of old and new, with a fresh and innovative approach. Ordering is easy via the website, or customers can grab a coffee while they wait for Letty to create a bouquet on the spot. A gift for a friend, weddings, corporate flowers, whatever you need – Pepperberry can do it all. “We like to think of ourselves as a onestop-shop,” says Letty. “Do think of us this upcoming Mother’s Day. We make up lovely gift hampers to spoil your mum – with that includes bags of home-made sweet treats and a pretty posy of flowers.” Pepperberry Café & Florist is located at 919 Colombo Street, on the corner of Bealey Ave, and is open from 7am-3.30pm, Monday to Friday, and 7.30am-2pm Saturdays. To order flowers easily online, or for more information on catering, please visit www.pepperberry.co.nz

Lunch At the Harbour Overlooking the working port of Lyttelton, the Fisherman’s Wharf restaurant serves fresh fish caught by its own boats as well as a whole raft of culinary flavours that will transport you around the world. WORDS VICTORIA TAIT PhOtOGRAPhY NICK MCLeAN

The international menu at Fisherman’s Wharf draws influence from the range of cultures in its kitchen. Chefs from Thailand, China and New Zealand have added a natural Indo-fusion to the recipes, creating a diverse and flavoursome menu. There really is a dish for every palate. Open for lunch and dinner, there is the option to either have a light meal or a full three-course feast. On warm days and nights the outside veranda overlooking the port makes for a stunning dining experience. You’re welcome to pop in for a cold beer or ice chocolate and see what’s happening at the port. To tempt your taste buds I would suggest trying the following options. For an entrée, opt for the crumbed camembert – a gooey camembert with a zesty deep-fried crust

and cranberry dipping sauce. Pescatarians will love the classic seafood chowder, with its mix of fresh fish, prawns, mussels, shrimp, squid and vegetables in a creamy voluté, served with garlic bread. The light options menu includes local favourite Tom Yum soup. This spicy broth offers the flavours of coconut, chilli, coriander and lemongrass with vegetables, alongside your choice of fish, prawns or chicken. For the main affair there are numerous choices, including the famous ‘Fish of The Day’. The hero of the dish is the fresh fish – caught from the business’s own boats – and can be served in four ways. Choose between pan-seared with herb butter, potato of the day and salad; seared with Cajun spices and topped with mango salsa

on kumara chips; oven baked with lime pickle, coconut cream and banana served on rice; or, oven baked Italian style with a rich tomato sauce, olives and capers on a bed of pasta that has been tossed with garlic, parsley and olive oil. It’s a hard dish to go past that’s for sure! However, if fish is not to your liking, there is the chef’s curry of the day to consider, and also the succulent rib-eye steak. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are also ripe for the picking. As for desserts these are made on site, and the banana spring rolls are a must-try. Filled with banana and lemon curd, then tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with chocolate dipping sauce and ice-cream, this sweet finish is the cherry on top for an experience as idyllic as it is satisfying.

GeNerATIoN MoDeL Ross Kiddie looks at the makeover BMW has given its X1 sport utility vehicle.

LET YOUR INSTINCTS DRIVE YOU.

The all new MINI Clubman has been intuitively designed down to the last detail. It is the perfect combination of urban practicality and sophisticated style. THE NEW MINI CLUBMAN.

Given the importance of the SUV market, especially the mainstream/affordable section, BMW wasn’t going to let development wane on its popular X1. Late last year, the X1 received a fairly hefty makeover, so much so that BMW is calling it a new generation model. While the concept has been retained, the new X1 has a more chunky, muscular appearance providing an aggressive stance. The interior has also been revised to offer more space, and it carries more kit in terms of innovation. However, most importantly, BMW has revised the engine line-up in the X1 to include two brand new engines – petrol and diesel. All four powertrains are more efficient and more powerful than the previous generation units. The test car was the xDrive20dn. As its nomenclature suggests it is a four-cylinder, 2-litre, turbocharged diesel model. It is rated by BMW at 140kW and 400Nm, and lays claim to an amazing 4.9-litre per 100km (57mpg) combined cycle fuel usage rating. I wouldn’t dispute that figure. During my testing time the fuel usage readout was constantly listing around 6.5l/100km (43mpg) with a stunning 4l/100km (70mpg) available instantaneously at 100km/h in eighth gear (engine speed 1500rpm). Yes, the engine drives through a fabulous eight-speed traditional gearbox. There are steering wheel-mounted paddles if you want to take control over the gear-shifting process, and if you want to force sporty performance, sport mode engine management protocols are available through a central consolemounted switch. It also offers eco pro mode for economical motoring, or normal mode; the latter I far prefer and as you can ascertain, it still provides fuel consumption figures to envy.

And the economy doesn’t come at the cost of performance. The X1 in this form is quick with a 7.6sec standstill to 100km/h time. It feels constantly feisty beneath the accelerator, and when the turbo boost really kicks in through the mid-range the diesel X1 takes on a sporty persona. That is matched by a well-tuned chassis and suspension set-up. The fully-independent set-up is only moderately firmed so that ride comfort has a high priority. Yet the X1 can be driven like a sports sedan, it has decisive handling manners and accuracy is precise, while body balance is well controlled. XDrive simply means four-wheel-drive, and that adds in the grip factor. even when conditions don’t necessitate full involvement of fourwheel-drive, the X1 feels strongly attached to the road all of the time, and that imparts a secure sensation underneath. I like the way the X1 handles, it is almost unnatural for an SUV and takes on the characteristics of BMW’s desirable sports sedans; its pedigree shows up in its performance. Maximum torque is spread strongly throughout the rev range, which means the slightest throttle provocation will result in eager response. The X1 has also been refreshed so that occupants get a comfortable ride. It can be classed as a true five-seater, although at just under 4.5m it isn’t a big vehicle, but for the smaller family it is an SUV which competes fairly in that segment. And it has a load space on par for vehicle type. The test car was carrying a few optional extras, but even at $80,600 the xDrive20d represents value for a premium vehicle, and bear in mind that the four-model range starts at $65,500 for the petrol-fuelled two-wheel-drive sDrive18d. For the $80k you get a host of kit including satellite navigation,

central display screen, i-Drive infotainment controller, dual-zone climate control, idle stop-start, and ConnectedDrive, a driver emergency assistance platform and concierge service, just to list a few of the items. The specification level is something BMW does well, you can option up through a long list of accessories. For that reason, the X1 is an important car for BMW. It is priced so that buyers can reach the brand and enjoy the benefits of a European buying experience.

Auto Pilot vs Auto Etiquette Modern motor vehicles are safer and more reliable than they have ever been – yet more than one million people are killed in car accidents around the world each year, and more than 50 million are injured. Why? Largely because one perilous element in the mechanics of driving remains unperfected by progress: the human being. – Tom Chatfield

The phrase “I wasn’t thinking; I was on auto pilot” is a somewhat frightening statement when it comes to driving a vehicle. But, before judgement is cast, I am sure you have been guilty at least once for performing in this manner. Vehicle – a thing used for transporting people or goods, especially on land, such as a car, lorry, or cart. To drive a vehicle there is process, as we all well know. An application, lessons, instruction, practice, licences – learners, restricted and then, euphoria. With your full licence awarded, the waiting game is over and freedom is yours – the road is your domain! Although comprehensive, one lesson plan omitted from the ‘Hitchhiker’s Guide to the

Galaxy of Driving’ is etiquette: the customary code of polite behaviour in society or among members of a particular profession or group. When we’re behind the wheel, that means consideration of others on the road you share. Frightening to say, but in my concise, entertaining, completely opinionated column, I cannot even attempt to acknowledge every aspect of inadequacies that happen every day because of below-par Auto Etiquette. But I will attempt to highlight a couple of my personal pet peeves. An Indicator – a flashing light or device on a vehicle to show that it is about to change lanes or turn. Completely self-explanatory you would think, but alas, no. As well as being responsible for your

own welfare whilst driving and being considerate of others, we should also possess the psychic abilities of a clairvoyant to predict the movements of the vehicles we are following. A quick change of a vehicle into your line, without indication, and your relaxed driving experience is aggressively interrupted, with sheer frustration taking hold. A toot of a horn, and all you are left with is self-pity and disdain for your fellow man and a dialogue of less-than-refined, fourlettered expletives. Question: Are you a “let someone in if you can” or a “keep looking straight ahead and pretend you didn’t see them” driver? I completely get both character traits and I do believe you can be in both camps, situation

dependent. Regardless, the rules are the same – etiquette, etiquette, etiquette. If your considerate, polite, caring fellow man makes the decision to let you in, please acknowledge their goodwill! What effort does it take to raise your hand with a friendly wave, mouth “thank you” or instigate a couple of seconds flashing your hazard lights. The flow-on effect from this is surely to be a positive one – paying it forward. Have an amazing April, and – in the words of sergeant Phil Esterhaus – “Hey, let’s be careful out there!”
